What is the KonMari Method®?

The question of what you want to own, is actually the question of how you want to live your life
— The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo

The KonMari Method® , created by organizing expert Marie Kondo, is more than just tidying. It's a mindful, heart-centered approach to organizing and decluttering based on the idea that your home reflects your inner world. Grounded in these 6 principles, the method helps you make space for more clarity and joy.

1. Commit to tidying up
Tidying starts with a clear decision to make a change. It’s not just about cleaning your space, it’s about shifting your relationship with your belongings in a way that supports your well-being. When you commit fully, lasting results follow.

2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle
Before you start, get clear on how you want your space to support your daily life. This vision helps guide every decision you make along the way.

3. Finish discarding first
Decluttering is the first step toward transformation. Before organizing anything, it’s important to release the items that no longer serve you. Discarding with gratitude ensures that you're only organizing what truly matters, making the process more efficient and meaningful.

4. Tidy by category, not by location
Instead of going room by room, the method encourages you to sort by category; starting with clothes, then books, papers, komono (miscellaneous), and finally, sentimental items. This approach helps you see the full volume of items in each category so you can make more informed choices.

5. Follow the right order
Starting with easier items, such as clothing, helps you build your decision-making muscle. As you progress through each category in order, you are able declutter each subsequent category with more clarity.

6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy
At the heart of the method is a simple yet powerful question: “Does this spark joy?” Joy looks different for everyone and we will discover what it means for you during your sessions. This personal approach helps you trust your intuition and surround yourself only with things that lift you up and spark joy!
